This probably doesn't go here but I am going to give thoughts on all this talk about floating the needle or riding the tube. It's not really to say you do it one way or another its about being able to do each style and approach where you see fit. For example if your working in a small area where lines are close together and you are filling in color you may want to float the needle. Or when you're linning a peice you would be best to ride the tube with just the needle barley hanging out so that your lines are consistantly the same width all the way through. This approach is also much quicker in my opinion. Remember this is just my opinion.

I always say , if it works for u then do it , dont keep making mistakes trying to change a style ur already adapted to . If u look at guy atchisons web site , and go through his Q&A section , u will see alot of experienced artists in the industry asking why they are having so many problems with trying to work the machine Guys way , thats because they are so used to doing a different style for so many years . U can do just as good work as Guy if u just practice doing artwork like his ... not the way u hold ur machine .

And if that od of line work works for u then more power to ya .
I have already adapted to a od of never running the tube to the skin , Im not saying one way is better , just that if I try to change then I would have all kinds of problems since Im not used to that way...

Runic, Your latest posted pics are great. But like I said I notice inconsistant line work. Meaning your lines are not equally wide all the way through. Use what works for you but I think you shoud try linning riding the tube with about a millimeter of the needle hanging out. Try it on something simple that can be fixed easily if there is complications. I'm not trying to say your way doesn't work because like I said your work looks good. Just be open minded and try it. If you pull and push better lines quicker than don't be surprised. Take your time. Don't go to fast or to slow. If you go to fast you will miss spots in your linning and if you go to slow then you will get blowouts. Try it this way and you may thank me later and if not, hey you already have your own approach. Mind you most of the professionals do it this way. It's your choice.

I will be posting som pics before long.

Well the only pic I see inconsistant line work in is the cross , which I"ll admit I see one spot on the flames was a little off , but as I stated I think I enlarged a little too much as it was fine when I tattooed it .

But I will give ur method a try and see if it works any better for me ,

runic, this is not my method. Like I said most of the successful tattoo artist in my area use this method linning. Thats not to say they use it all the time. If they did they would bleed colors past lines they were not supposed to if they were working in a small area. If you're coloring in a big area then ride the tube because there is no risk. But when I'm working in a small area I float the needle to be sure my color comes all the way to the outline and not past it. Floating the needle tip you have the ability to see the needle penatrate, but you also have the ability to go to deep. WHen you ride the tube you can only go so deep. Like I said I did not "invent" this method because I'm sure there is probably thousands of people who use it. This is just what seems to bring about the best results for most people as well as my self.

man not to be a wet blanket here but i would really caution putting the tip of any tube directly on the skin. i have tried just about every tube on the market and no matter how " hi grade" the s.s. they all groove from the needle riding in the tube and must be filed after some use. next generation and pappion seem to have the best. however on liner tips you will develope a small burr at the very end of the tip from wear. this burr will cause some havoc when going over a fresh line if it is noticable. take a tube right after you soaked it in a pre steriztion solution and drag it across the soft skin on the inside of your wrist. it should feel real smooth and not leave a white line or scratch. an old timer taught me this when making needles and checking for burrs. i prefer to loop my needles ,but o.k. i did this and to my suprise i had to get the file out on a couple. just food for thought.
