Hey from Down Under. I have been tattooing for 12 years with rounds and flats. Suggestions for starting groups with magnums?

framey - thanks /olboys,
I don't know what you mean bigger in size. I'll use a #12stainless 1 to 14
for all work. Heavy black is popular.

ok, so what do you recommend using magnums for? An area that's at least a specific measurement big? Or would you recommend using them for lots of things, like filling in tribal, etc.

I used to swear by my rounds. Used them for everything. These days I'm a converted magnum freak. I use primarily 5 and 7 mags for shade and color but I also have some 9 and 13 mags for larger areas. A very cool thing about a mag and it's the same with a flat is that you can use an arching motion and get a nice effect. Kind of like a caligraphy pen. It's good for gradually widening a line or getting a smoke effect. And they lay down solid color like nobody's business.

[quote]what do you recommend using magnums for? After posting this six months ago and getting some good advice I have been using 7 needle mags for black work. I have always used rounds for black and colour and have a couple of photos in the forum album as examples.
What I worked out is that a mag packs ink but are difficult to use.
Some only use mags for lining, shade and colour but you must have experience to do this.
My advice is use a variety of needle groups until your comfortable with what your using.
Use the rounds for outlining and the mag for fill. Do this in black as this will be the "easiest" colour to use until you get your head around it.
If you use them try a round liner outline on a "tribal" piece. Go into the points and corners and colour them. If you do this with the mag first time you will risk biting holes in your customers tattoo.
Use the mag in an upward motion ( so as to go with body grain ) and try not to go to the same spot too many times.

Hi Im new here but Im catching up quick with the reading.
Excellent advice on everything and a lot of good hints. So many tattoo artists think their shit dont stink. Its nice to see a group of people dedicated to their profession (or passion) who are willing to hand out advice freely and with delite!
But let me get this straight. You use your liner to fill in points and some fill in spots?
And you can use a mag to line?
Gremlin and I have been talking about trying some mags and after what I have been reading...I am really interested in trying them.
(Ps. I wouldnt kill him for tattooing another womans coochie..lol)
