I have very pretty shading for the most part, but seems I just can't get a good variation of shades of black and grey. The peice looks nice but to me too flat. I haven't really worked a lot with grey wash, I usually just use straight black ink and apply it lighter or darker where needed, and sometimes if I want it real light I just dilute with a little water. Is this my problem? What is the best way to blend the straight black for the darkest shadows with the grey-wash for a lighter effect, without showing the obvious difference in hues?
how many differnt shades of grey wash are you useing, and are you useing a whip shadeing technique?

Well, that's just it. I don't have a lot of experience with the grey wash; the few times I've actually used it there was the obvious difference between the black hue and the grey hue, so I dropped the grey wash all together in order to work on smoother and more fluent shading with just the black. Now that I'm able to blend the blackest blacks to the lightest, barely there blacks, I want to incorporate the grey wash in my next endeavors, but I'm afraid that it won't look as consistent. I guess the question is really just the best technique in blending the two hues so it does not appear blotchy or inconsistent? :?

For a consistent gray I would pre- mix your blacks to different shades of gray eg. 15%,25%,50% ect. and so on in different bottles. hope this helps
