I personally don't use shaders- don't care for them- I just dilute my inks to the shades I need & I'm good to go. I started using 7's primarily & still use mainly 7's, 8's and 9 rounds for everything. If I have intricate details that need to be seen, I use a 3r- I NEVER use 1's- hate 'em- I don't feel in control with them. I really don't feel as in control with 3's either. I personally don't like mags- maybe because I tried using them too early in my experience- just didn't feel right, and yes, it is easy to tear up the skin- I know I did. I recently used a 4 flat- that worked well for coloring & didn't feel too awkward. Maybe there is a lot more out there that I SHOULD try, but I like to keep it simple, and my results don't lie.

Hello,
I personally use 3rl and 8rs for just about everything. These are great needle to get started with. Remember also that needle are a one time use item. Get some good ink to start with, do it right the first time. Read through this web site and it will answere most of your question. If no ask.

Hey guys
I personally do not use 5R for lining. They are good to shade or color for very small pieces.
The reason I don't use 5R for lining is becuase of how it is made. If you notice, there is blank space right in the middle of the needles. If not used correctly and/or machine isn't set right and other reasons, you may notice a blank line between your line...
3R and 7R don't have this problem....
I also use a lot of magnums but prefer flat over magnums also because of the way they are made...
It really just depends on what I want to get done...

My advice about needles would be to use what works for you. If something works, and you are 100% satisfied, don't change it.
I know a lot of artist who only use rounds for everything and they do some awesome work. Hope this helps...

Hello,
This gap must be smaller than the naked eye because i have never seen it. How would you check this out on a tattoo. I just done a large piece with a 5rl I did not see the gap. Not saying that it isnt there, I just want to check this out for my self when he comes in for the shadeing.

Hello,
I think what you are talking about is what we call a 5RS. :D

no, these are called old school the tip of the needle is rounded thus the blunt name. dermagraphis has them on their site. i am going to try them on my self and see how they are. he says they are super smooth. i have seen the work even the color looks brighter.

It is not that 5R do not work, and always leave a blank line in between. If not used correctly and a lot of other reasons, you may come up with this problem. It's just an advise for the people who are starting out...
It's just my perosnal reason. I prefer lining with 3 and 7R. Lines should be even and the same width to be right...

Some of you will run into this problem sooner or later...

But like I said before...if it works, leave it alone...

hes talking about the needle type itself.
the type hes using r also known as "bullet nose" type needles!
they have a short taper to them wich leaves a bigger hole and that ='s more ink in the skin! ya dig? 8)

also you can get textured stainless sharps with medium and blunt tapers from cam. and as well from eikon i believe. theyre textured like carbons with out the carbon rust hassle. i use the cam medium tapers myself. whip up a mag with those babys and the ink flies in without tearin em to bits. they work great for b&g as well just turn the old shader down and go at it. they do have the super short taper sharps they call nature needles but theyre so blunt for my likin. thats my 2c worth

Hello,
I think i will stick to the new school needles and not worry about the line. I only use a 5rl on large outlines anyway.
