after healing, a piece I did started looking stripey. The solid black wasn't really all that solid and seemed tohave white streaks through it. They all go in the same direction, so its not like I missed any areas while shading. Any ideas what I did wrong?

sounds like there might have been some cracks in the scabbing ...that can cause bleeding and loss of ink , and sometimes scaring ,Was it in an area with alot of folds in the skin ? like the elbow, or the but as long as they arent raised scars , they should be able to be colored again .

it was above the knee, but I know the bastard didn't put any lotion on it for two days...makes me feel better that it might not be my fault

Hello,
You have to watch those kinds of people. They always blame it on the tattooist. Thats one reason you take pictures. I post a large view of the tattoo aftercare form on my shop wall. Basically it states that if the aftercare is not followed i will not repair it unless you pay for it. :D

Yeah, I did a piece on my husband, and to try it out, he thought he'd let his tattoo dry out after the first day, and not put anything on it during the healing process- he got the idea from a guy who has a HUGE koi backpiece, and he swore by this method. Anyway, my hubby ended up with very small white cracks in the color- all verticle. You would be able to tell if it were something you did during the tattoo or if it is a healing issue.
