What is the best book I can buy for more info about tattooing- specifically, about machines and settings? Is the a-z huck spalding book really a good buy? I've heard conflicting info about it. I'm not in the position to drop $100 + on a book that'll do me little or no good. I'm trying to find some books on ebay to work better with my budget, but no luck so far- anyone out there have any useful "how to" books they'd like to get rid of???

The best and cheapest book would be A-Z Huck. It has all the basics.
If you get the money buy his vid too. It's pretty good for the basics.
:D

I hear ya, oz...I need something mainly on the machines themselves. I've tried follwing the forum posts their, but I really need a break down. I've re-built my machines under professional supervision, but it was a while ago, and I have no spare machines to use if I can't make it work right, so instead of taking the chance on messing them up, I just continue to tweak.

Hello,
If you email me i can help you tune your machine right. Its really is not that hard once you get the hang of it. :D

I can tune it, no problem, but the parts are getting old, but I'm afraid to replace them just yet, just in case I can't get it working right again. I would like info on the different machine parts, how they should be put together, etc... Tuneing and tweaking I've got down; it's just the actual break down and put together I need a book on.

hello,
So are you going to replace the springs and file the contact screw down flat? what do you need to do.; You can take the springs and armiture bar off as one unit. The only way to learn is to get in there and do it. There are enough of us here that can help you get it running if you get stuck. I am always here. :D

Thanks Preacher- I just may email you :) I've taken my machine apart once, and it took a while to get it realigned the way it needed to be- but it was a great learning experience. I should probably do it more often! I have 2 machines & have just recently set up one as liner & one as shader- learning more about this. Next, I need to peel off the plastic around my capacitor to see what I'm running with- I have no idea. May need to buy different ones to accomodate lining/shading- I hear radio shack has them for under $5?? I also need to buy different spring gauges and lengths & fool around with them....

You should check out Guy Aitchison's "Reinventing The Tattoo". It's geared more toward the intermediate to advanced artist but anyone with interest in tattoo will gain a lot from it. Its now a few years old but far from outdated. Guy also will answer your questions online and you are allowed access to photos online that coincide with the book. Its layed out more like a course syllabus than a book and is a great investment. pricey but very good. (100$) www.hyperspacestudios.com

Machinegun mags?? Never heard of them. Not around here, anyway. I'm friends with the owner of the corner store up the block, I always get the latest tattoo mags there. I'll ask him to look into it, maybe he'll order me some if he can find them.
