Ok... something I've been thinking about for quite some time. . the story goes... when you pull the a-bar down it should be making contact with the front coil and be a hair shy of any contact with the rear coil. Why the gap with the rear coil? is this how a machine should really be set or is it bunk? I haven't noticed a difference in the way my machines run either way.

There is what is called a "fulcrum point". Different strokes for different folks. The key is that you want to adjust it so it doesn't go past that "Sweet Spot" if you travel too far past that point then it will require more voltage to run. Thats not a good thing.
Below is a quote I saved from a post before the forum was whacked earlier this week.

Also the air gap between the front coil and the bottom of the armature bar is the stroke of the machine. the front , rear , spring and a bar act as one unit, like a diving board, the fulcrum point is the edge of the rear shelf . to get the MOST effeciency , when the a bar hits the front coil, it must hit flat and must be inline or parallel with the bottom of the frame ( where the coils are sitting) YOU MAY HAVE TO RAISE THE FRONT COIL TO ACHEIVE THIS, PLEASE KEEP IN MIND YOU MUST SHIM THE REAR COIL SO THAT THERE IS A VERY SMALL GAP BETWEEN THE A BAR AND THE REAR COIL. USUALLY ABOUT A ROLLING PAPER FOLDED TWICE AND THEN TWICE AGAIN. Pull down on the nipple till the a bar rests on the front coil and slide the paper between the rear coil and the bottom of the a bar, adjust accordingly with shims. NOTE.. If you take the shims out of the front coil to get more stroke , now the a bar has to travel past the ideal fulcrum point and this requires more voltage, get it? The stroke of a machine is achieved buy "rolling" the rear spring to the required bend. more bend , longer stroke, higher duty cycle.

Hope that helped

Not a problem man. I save a lot of informative posts just in case. And in this instance it worked out. lol
I tweek my machines all the time and ya know what? Maybe I'm a little anal when it comes to them running just right. But when it's running in that sweet spot you will definately know it.

Im the same way dude.. too analytical and meticulous.. (ever notice how the word 'analytical' starts off with the word 'anal' ?) on my pricey machines I've noticed the slight gap to the rear coil.. on my inexpensive machines I notice the A-bar is flush with the front and rear. No matter how much I tweak, adjust, switch parts.. for some reason I feel more comfortable using my cheaper machines.. they just always run strong and feel more solid.. even with the lowest voltage.. go figure.
