hey essex, your the artist you can outline with color if you want and there is no rule written or un written that i know about but you have to understand about contrasting colors such as skin tones in relations to
the color you choose for your outline. the outline color may blend with your skin and then it may not have that artistic punch the artwork may need to stand out. also unless your attempting to have that watercolor look and feel you won't have the same effect either.
as for the color spreading, the ink is only where you put it, but when the skin stretches, it will give the appearence that the ink has spread out a little bit. i have seen many tattoo's that have had that same effect but it was a matter of preference, not only to the artist tattooing but to the customer as well. i maybe wrong but that's my take on it.

i did a black treble clef on a local musicians fore arm i outlined in black and did the clef solid black afterwards i took a light blue and shaded around the piece to make it POP. turned out really well.worked great.then on the other hand ive done an outline using blue ink but while shading it colors got mixed up and didnt look so great til i added black. word of advice blue out line with yellow shading can make green spots in tattoo,go figure

Theres nothing written in stone , my friend !! Find your own groove , the only thing is 99% of the time you should work from the darkest color first to the lighest color ,so you dont have your blue bleeding into your red !! and regarding the other 1% of the time thats another thread :D !!!!

my faveorite thing about art is that there is nothing about art that is either right or wrong.
art is in the eye of the beholder? or something....

"BLOODLINE" it first, then shade the tat as any other, "from dark to light". Don't outline with black, because when outlining you deposit much more ink into the skin. Thus you want to use a bloodline and then shade the piece as if you had a solid outline. last you can go baqck and insert the border outline in whatever color you want.
Also ink doesn't "bleed". You always go dark to light because when you tattoo you insert thousands of tiny holes into the skin. When you use a lighter color first like say pink, then go back and tat another area in say dark blue, your gonna wipe, when you do and that blue ink goes over thouse thousands of tiny holes some will be deposited, thus changing the color from pink to a greyish purple. This is why you go fron dark to light, because the color mixing is less noticable.
Good luck and hope you understand what I was trying to explain. Feel free to PM me with any questions you have.

You should have no problem , if thats what the plan is , as long as you give it time all should be well ! this is just my OPINION . And as far as the colors bleeding into each other ,i was taught that, if its absolutely necessary , if you HAVE to go back into the tattoo w/ a dark color , to saturate the area w/ A&D or Vaseline (to clog the pores) , and take care of what needs to be done , I'm talking about a fresh tattoo here ..not a healed one ! hope this helps .

Forgiven, is very right, if you ever have to go back with a darker color use lots of vaso or A&D, And still be careful. Blot don't wipe.
As for the "Bleeding into other colors" I must have misunderstood, I assumed that you meant that the colors would bleed out under the skin. My appologies, the reason I like this board is the lack of bashing. And I don't want to tell anyone they're wrong. One thing I've learned in tattooing is everyone learns differently, and used different techniques, the only thing that matters much is the end result.
