I keep hearing about mags but have never used one, what advantage has a what size mag against say a 14 round for colouring large areas such as tribal or japanese style with lots of large areas of black, how is the mag used in relation to the round been used in a circular motion.

a month ago i asked the same question then i ordered some 7 mags and i use them for every thing now, once you use them you wont want rounds. you use them in the same way, small circles , but keep it wet with ink, and watch what your doing so you dont slice them,

try them they are the best thing since sliced bread!!!!

I dont know how much you know about mags so here goes ......mags are a grouping of needles in a flat configuration , (but dont confuse them w/ flats which are also available ), the mag needles are either woven or staggered , flats are one layer of needles , magnums are two layers ;7 mag =4 on the bottom , 3 three on top ......They're extremely versatile once you get the hang of them , some of the big-name boys use them for everything , LINING , shading and packing in the color !!! but as mr.bugdie said watch what youre doing if your not very carefull you can rip some shit up !!! start out w/ some 5 mags , they'll be your favorites till its time to move up !! :D

I used rounds for years. Never being real big into the tribal style, I would refuse tribal pieces. But with tribal being more and more prevaliant in todays newschool tattoos, I have recently changed my policy and began doing large tribal designs. A few days ago I was to be starting a large tribal back piece, and askes some of the good folks of the community what thier opinion on mag over rounds was. Well, mags took best of show. I ordered, 5's, 7's, and 13's. Used a five to test the water, covered well, and jumped right up to the 13. Well we're currently 14 hrs into it and nearly 2/3 done. I had anticipated this to be an easy 40 + hr job. Mags deff do the job. Haven't had any probs so far, so my advice is just take it easy, and don't overwork the skin. Good luck.

When i started tattooing i was told never to use them. One day i got the wonge order and instead of sending them back i decided to try them... worked great for packing in color.... I have used them every since... I still prefer rounds for grey wash and sometimes stacks... Stacks give me the real light greys that i like in some pieces

Like evreyone said mags are better for packing in the ink but be carefull not tear someone up with them and dont over work the skin.
also there are other types of Mags I have used ones called mag specials which they are more like 2 layers of flats & there is also Round mags which I use all of the time.

thinking about trying the special mags, (stacked), what does everyone think about those? they seem good, theoretically.

Kewl deal a question I can answer.....but all ways a day late....lol

Mag are nice for packing in the ink 5&7 I found work great for myself. But like everyone said before me you got to watch you'll slice the skin before you know it.

I have heard of the Stacked and Rounded Mag's, looking forward to giving them a go...

I have never heard of round mags?

Also known as "curved" Instead of the needles all being flat they put a curve in them so the needles lay flat but your tips form a "U" shape. I personally never use them. But for some they swear by them.

dont know if this ir right but
round mags are in fact normal mags definition is any amount of needles ie 3,5,7,9,11,13 etc all in a flat formation only every other needle is slightly bent up ie curved so they look like they ere stacked.
stacked needles are in fact 2 sets of flats stacked on top of each other
and are not mags

Correct, your round or curved mags have the needles towards the outside set back a bit to give you a "U' shaped configuration.

The above site explains the round mag theroy.

This sounds really intresting! I got the new catalouge from tts , i had never seen round mags before, but if they are as good as usual mags and causes less trauma to the skin, there is no reason to use ordinary mags!

Or am i wrong?

I'm trippin on this. If you tilt a curved mag, the shortest needle (outer) would set the depth and the longer needles up the side of the curve would come close to an even stroke. Straight on it's uneven. It would have to be an edging tool for some sort for specialty work?? :?
Can't get my head around it.

I posted this link before, but it explains the curved mag theror pretty well with illistrations. Check it out I'm sure it will explain it better than I can.

I have used them, and found no real difference. Seemed to cover the same. However I did like the way they shaded when using them for B&G work. Seemed to get a more gradual color gradiant. But for fill work, no diff to me.

i have thought about it and it kind of makes sence but then again even with the skin pulled tight the skin still has enugh play that if the needles are straight it should be more even rather than the taper of the image in the link i have modified the pic on the left from the link you gave

just my thoughts

Just try to use a mag again, this time on my self so was able to feel how it was working.. And Damn thing was awsome, I hadnt done any shading work yet, only tribals "only thing freinds seem to want" so it was a new thing all the way around.. I'm sold on them now.
