View Full Version : Color solid to the outline.

I seem to have a heck of a time bringing my color all the way to my outlines in the first/second pass. :? It seems that every time I end up having to go back with my liner to get that little bitty space filled between where the color ends and where the outline is located. It's irratating because it's a HUGE waste of time. I end up doing it this way however because I don't want to turn my victims into hamburger by repeatedly going over the skin that has plenty of color already; nor do I want not to leave a freaken gap. I realize that part of the issue is an ingrained fear of coloring outside of the lines....
Any suggestions  would be most appriciated! :P
PS I am new to this board and TOTALLY impressed!

FIRST OFF , WELCOME TO THE FORUM , LOTS OF GOOD STUFF HAPPENING HERE !!! I GET THE COLOR AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE THEN GRAB MY LINER, SLOW IT DOWN A LITTLE , MAKING SURE ALL BLACK HAS BEEN WASHED OUT , THEN JUST FILL W/ THAT , AND IF THE LINER IS NOT LARGE ENUFF , I'LL USE AN 8RD SHADER OR EVEN A 14RD SHADER(OR 14 RD LINER ),THATS A HEALTHY FEAR , PAY ATTENTION AND EVENTUALLY IT WILL SUBSIDE AFTER A FEW TATTOOS  !!! I MAKE SURE I HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF NEEDLES , YOU NEVER KNOW .....P.S. THIS IS A GREAT FORUM , GO AND READ THE OLD POSTS , THERE IS ALOT OF TIGHT INFO JUST WAITING FOR YOU , DONT BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS ....THERES PLENTY OF GOOD FOLKS HERE WHO WILL BE HAPPY TO GIVE THEY'RE EXPERIENCES & STRENGTHS ...GOOD LUCK  !!!!!!!

Are you matching up your needle groups? You didn't say what you were using but if I'm doing a small fine line piece with single or 3 needle I'll go as small as a seven round shader. For larger tattoo I'll use bigger liners not only for a bolder outline but because I'm using bigger shaders too. A big shader to fill a fine line can be difficult and make you worry about going over the outline.
What I'm trying to say is it's ok to go over the inside your outline with a shader so maybe give yourself a bit of room to move?
Just a thought.
PS. Welcome

YOU ALSO MIGHT WANT TO CHECK OUT SOME 5 MAGNUMS , IF YOU DONT HAVE ANY, GET SOME !!!! I FIND THEY'RE ARE THE MOST VERSATILE NEEDLE FOR SHADING OUT THERE !!! :P

i use 7 mags for almost anything as well so when i have a bit that just doesn't reach i dont use a liner i just angle the mag so i am only using a few needles and not all of them, it takes a bit of practice but it works

I have to agree with Forgiven on the 5mag thing they are a great needle for tightening and catching edges etc. I f I am out of those I use a 4 or 6 flat if I have to (prefer the 5 mag though)

welcom to the forum!
i used to have this problem when using a mag to color in. i would think that i was getting to the edge, but when it was said and done, the color just wasnt there.
mostly you just have to have a good feel for the machine and confidence in yourself.
plus working off the needle instead of the tube really helps in these situations also.
hope that helps! hope i didnt reapeat anybody also lol.

I honestly dont know what it is ,but i find the ink lays down easier and faster ( for me atleast ) w/ a 5 mag , all i use to use was a 7 mag (and larger ) , but recently the 5s have been smokin' ...to each his own !!! Was discussing it w/ some of the boys and the conclusion is that they're magic  !!!!

I Use them sometimes, but i think the needles get to much spread on a 5 compared to a 7..
For filling they are great ! I´ll give you that, but for shading i prefer a mag 7 ;)
I never work with a needle bigger than 11 mag. It takes the whole "feeling" away.

first off, welcome girl
if your a beginner, then using a 8 round shader is a good way to get by until you get better aquainted with coloring and shading near your outlines
we all have different ways of accomplishing the same effect, this site Will enlighten you and give you the knowledge you seek, just listen and soak it all in.
ignorance is no excuse and knowledge is a blessing.

When filling in color up to the outline you should go just a bit farther. It almost looks like you're going outside the line but you're actually not. When you color you get more ink on the skin and it obstructs your view of the line. Keep a wiping towel in one hand and work up to the line with the machine. Do a little, wipe it then do more. It takes a bit of practice to get confident that you're not coloring outside the lines.

Welcome! I too am a VERY new aspiring tattooist, and I was having the same exact problem, but then I tried using some small Round Shaders and I would even go as far as touching my lines, and the color got in there just great. I ask tons of questions here, and get tons of great responses, so just read this forum as often as possible and ask questions, and you'll do great! Best of Luck with your tattooing!

Thank you all so very much for the info. I generally prefer a 7mag as I feel it lays color quite well and I can manipulate the angle of the needle for effect. 8) I appriciate alll of the helpfull hints. I do 99% custom work with very few hard lines. Most of my pieces are all about shade and shadow so when I have to bring the 2 together (hard lines and color) I end up with this issue. :? I do believe however that I have received enough tidbits of knowledge from you all to be able to go into my next tat with more confidence. I have a 1/2 sleave to start this weekend so I will let you all know how it gos. I have a full time day job and tat in the evening and on the weekends, so I only tat 1-3 times per week or so.
Anyway, thanks again and I will keep a readin....

If your doing a tribal design that needs filling in use a larger needle group for lining making the outline fatter... if your fine lining and filling with colour use a mag......if youve still got missed parts by the outline then use a new liner needle in your colouring machine....slower machine picks up more ink

I like using a 7mag in the more open spaces and a 14 rl in the tighter spots I like to line with a 5 liner but for more finer 3 rl 5 mags are awesome to me for blending colors onto each other as far as gettin close to the lines put your tip down to the skin and bump it then wipe and you will be able to see where your ink is but it sounds like you got it going on already and welcome to the forum what kind of inks you like. :D later look forward to hearing alot from you on the forum.
