I use Kuro Sumi and I love it. It goes in nice and stays black. It's pretty inexpensive too.

Sumi is really awsome. I know i'll get shit on for saying this be gentle guys dad(Valdar) already shit on me for it. I got a celtic cross done on my arm and i ended up sunburning it about 3 days after it was inked and its still blacker than a couple of my other tats that are 2 and 5 years old

I disagree . If you want to keep your stencil nice and clean, use an ink that is cut with water .
Sumi is to black sometimes, for example : If you are about to do a really detailed tattoo, Sumi can "destroy" your stencil. I only use sumi when i do tribals .
Just my 2 cents ;)

I use Starbrite Black Outling Ink.
I like it, but I dont know how it compares to Sumi.
I use Starbrite Tribal Black for filling, but Im not too happy about that so I am considering buying Sumi....

have to disagree w/ mr.g.g. ........sumi hasnt ruined any of my stencils . if i'm not paying attention or if its not applied right thats what ruins my shit ..i think kuro sumi is right on , i use it for detail work , black& grey , shading in a color piece it's very versatile once you get the feel for it !!!!! but thats just one opinion !!!

i had trouble with sumi ruining my stencil at first, but then i discovered if i put a thin layer of vasoline over the stencil it solved the problem.

hmm How long do you let the paper with the stencil on it sit? I spray on Dettol and press for a few seconds, then i gently remove it .
i use Spirit masters stencil paper.
But i find that it is easier to ruine the stencil on some people? Why is that?
I have a friend that just wont keep the stencil on... It gets ruined after a few wipes with the paper towls..
But over all i think Kuro sumi is the greatest black ink ever!

i think no matter what is used to apply the stencil it should be left on for a while , i've taken the stencil off too early and regretted it , now i apply the stencil , set up the machines THEN gently pull off the stencil paper , as long as i do this, it keeps nice and dark throughout the tattoo , as far as the stencil being easier to ruin on some , make sure whatever your applying it with is not too heavy, (wet) it should be tacky , slightly moist ....and remember some peoples skin is oily , I make sure i take that into consideration , when thats the case I hit them w/ the green-soap ,rinse , THEN spray w/ alocohol , ,THEN whatever it is i'm useing to get the stencil on there..... one more thing make sure to give the stencil PLENTY OF TIME TO DRY , before you start the tattoo ....hope this helped !!!!!!

Lately I've been using a 1 to 1 mix of Talens and Mom's Onyx and have pretty good results.
Whatcha use for filling large black tribals and such?

Kuro Sumi is the shit. The only thing I can add is this. If you ever have trouble keeping the stencil on. Spray the area with alcohol as Forgiven said then apply the stencil with alcohol and let dry and you will have to chisel that sucker off!
Just put a couple marks on a scrap piece of spirit master and do it on yourself and see what I mean.
Once I set the stencil, I let it dry for at least 10 minutes while I'm setting up.
I disagree . If you want to keep your stencil nice and clean, use an ink that is cut with water .

I float the needle so there really isn't much x-tra ink on the skin except where the line is so I just keep lining and only "carefully pat " away" from the area I lined. No need to really thoroughly clean the entire area untill the lining is finished anyway. If the ink isn't spitting all over the skin then stencil will last just fine.

I agree. I found that if I let the stencil sit and completely dry, I don't lose it. Plus, the key here is also to PAT not wipe (with lining). If I have to, I spray a little green soap on my towel and pat very lightly and the stencil will pop out again.

im a sumi fan myself i use it for all my black needs except mixing.
also i use a mix of alcohol and witch hazel to wipe the skin before stencils it removes oil and the witch hazel helps any irratation from shaving.

You mean there is a liner ink other than Sumi? lol
like Forgiven, I havent had any problems with it being hard on transfers. I just let them dry good before I do any work.

I tried out the new starbright outlining ink. It is awesome. Hardly any wiping needed. Stays clean.
