Whats an avg precentage that a shop takes from an artist? 30-50%?
I really have no clue what it would be. I know theres going to be a range pending on the shop and artist..
But trying to figure how many hours a week, I'd have to have booked to match my income now.

In our shop we have three partners who own it and three other artists who work there also. We don't charge a percentage, but charge a booth fee. We charge them $550.00 per month. They are responsible for supplies. Seems fair to us. We ro tate on walk-ins and T.O. to eachother to meet the needs of clients. Hope this helps. On an avg. I guess it works out to be around 10-15% of thier income.
The last shop I was at charged 50%, the artist had to supply, needles, ink, and machines, everything else was supplied by the studio

Right now, I'm paying 35% and he supplies an autoclave, sterilization bags, and paper towels. Oh yeah, and a stool and an old, old, old massage table. Other than that, the rest is on me.

most cheap ass shop owners only want to dish out a maximum of 50%even for a good artist in the midwest anyhow, and they usually dont supply you with shit!

I don't speak up in the tattoo forums much, but I just want to comment on the side of the shop owners. I make 50% across the board, tattooing, piercing, scarification, even jewelry sales. I think this is fair. Many times employees forget what it takes to keep the doors to the shop open. As shop manager, I handle or at least see most of the bills, and let me tell you.... I KNOW I am coming out on the better end of that percentage. Our insurance is 1500 dollars a year (for 2 artist), yellow page ads another 3200 dollars, radio ads another 2500 dollars a year, shop rent of over 6000 dollars a year, power another 2000 dollars a year, water and sewage couple hundred bucks, monthly spore test on the clave another couple hundred, at least another 5000 dollars a year in shop supplies (paper towels, disinfectants, copy paper, internet access, printer ink, thermofax paper, cleaning supplies, sterilization supplies, ink caps, vasoline, alcohol, tongue depressors, transpore tape, bandages, platic film, green soap by the gallons (you know what shipping cost these days?), shop licensing, and on the piercing side, he buys EVERYTHING.... Now true he is working off the same supplies at 100%..... and I know you said your aren't given much in way of supplies, but even so that is a huge outlay of cash just to keep the open sign on.......and the man does OWN the place.

50% is a sweet deal !!! there's a tattoo/piercing shop here where I'm at and at a convention last year I got to talking to one of their piercers and she told me they make 5.00 a piercing and they (the shop) are getting 40.00 a pop ( for the simple shit , the more exotic piercings are more $$$) and they are busy , fu#*ing conveyer belt ...no heart & soul , they're getting 125.00 for a 2 1/2" greywork cross !!!!

I work in Northwest Indiana and I get 50% I supply everything but the clave, therma fax, copy machine, and flash. I supply ink, needles, machines, tubes, caps, power box, vaseline, green soap, spray bottles, gloves, towels, tape, tounge depressors, and bandages. We even supply our own trash bags. Could be worse though. I guess.
