how do u go about covering up a huge iece of tribal at the top of the arm that was done years ago with a home made rotary machine so was therefore patchy and faded and done with bad quality ink of some kind? im aware of guy atchisons coverup work and the statement he writes on the website about pigment / skin sharing and laser treatment and black feilds being bad for coverup but does anyone have any ideas.

I have covered up a couple of hand made tattoos First I went over them with white Ink I think I used Starbrite white then I let them heal the reg. amount of healing time this droped the black a couple of shades lighter so I could cover them up. I also did one that I went over 3 times it works but you realy gotta be careful not to over work the skin. Hope this helps.

Whats wrong with being a decent person and possibly understanding that this forum saves many from disease and unprofessional tattoos, because the people arent afraid to share knowledge with beginners so they do it right the first time. Its stuck up a**holes like yourself that make it impossible for those of us who are stuck in smalltown USA without the luxury of an apprenticeship to do tattoos safe and professionally without feeling like your signature!!! which fits you VERY VERY well!!!

You can't let idiots like that bother you. They can't stand the fact that they had to go through an apprenticeship for the info we give and get here. We just have to remember that it doesn't really matter what these people say, we're still gonna have this community. Just ignore the stupidity and keep posting. This is the greatest tattoo forum and will always be.

this can be done , in James Kern's book ...Advanced Cover - ups , he talks about doing a few sessions in white to dull the existing tattoo enough to cover it !!!

Amen, and thanks for putting it much more eloquently than I could have.

Late'92 til '94. My mentor told me that the first tattoo on human skin would be on him. I learn't, practiced, and waited for 18 months then one night I lost the plot with him. Went berserk. He looked at me and laughed and said "I think your ready." That was one of the most important lessons he taught me.

14 years later I have ribbons, medallions, trophies and have had photos in national magazines. I constantly learn, even here on this forum. I have a licensed premises and am currently attaining Cert 2 in maintaining infectious disease. Some that weren't around in '92.

For all that Blah Blah above, what still gets to me is I still don't have a formal "you know everything about tattooing" certificate.

I'm going to get me one though.......before I die......

Thats funny, X-haze ...I did almost the exact same thing , I went fu#*ing banannas one day , he looked at me and told me to pick a piece of flash off the wall , one with alot of black shading and color changes , (i picked a metallic gold star w/ a skull in it !!) , and i was to get it exactly like the pic. .....went well (other than the shaking and massive endorphin rush  ) , then he let me start taking on some of the clients (smaller pieces) ......good stuff !!!!!!!!

Dont get me wrong I have no doubt that there are tons of great guys out there, case in point being the folks that post and help here. For what its worth I consider everyone here a mentor in some way or form, as I try and learn something from everything I read here. Sometimes its great technical advice relating to the craft and sometimes as of late its been that there is a ton of ignorance in the world.
