Hi all. I started out using the Prism inks (which I've come to find are no good) and I am slowly starting to replace those inks with Starbrite. The first work that I did with the Starbrite was a tribal piece, using the tribal black. When wiping the excess away, it was like I was working with mud. It was a real mess and just seemed very thick (made me real nervous). Is this normal and something that I just have to get use to?

I have not used tribal black, but I use Kuro Sumi, which is really thick and dark.
A thin coat of Vas over the stencile and lines will help with the ink clean ups and make it easier to work with.

So it's normal for a good ink to leave a mess like that???
I actually have a bottle of the Kuro Sumi that I haven't opened up yet. I think I'll use the tribal black up first before cracking it open (although I can't wait to try it).
Thanks!

ya, it's pretty normal for the better inks, they have alot more color pigment in them.
lucky me I started with MOM's so learned/ing with it being that way from the get go.

IF YOU DONT WANT TO OPEN THE SUMI YET , YOU MIGHT WANT TO THIN DOWN THE STARBRITE W/ SOME WITCH HAZEL AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS . PERSONALLY I'D PUT IT AWAY TILL YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY OR SOMETHING (RUN OUT OF SUMI  ) , AND IF YOU HAVE ANY PRIZM LEFT , TAKE UP PAINTING W/ THAT CRAP , I INHEIRITED A SHITLOAD OF IT , THREW IT ALL AWAY , DIDNT EVEN OPEN IT !!!!! GOOD LUCK MY FRIEND !!!!!

I am also using the Starbrite Tribal Black and I’m not too happy about it either. Its very, very thick and doesnt lay in the color as I would like it to - I might have run my machine too fast though... I will switch to Sumi, but I hope its not too thick. I really like the consistency of the Starbrite Outlining Ink. Is Sumi thicker than that?

Okay so I just did my first tattoo on myself using prizm black and red. It is a cheesy little heart. I don't like these inks AT ALL!! I used a 3 round for the outline which turned out good. But when I did the red with a stacked 7 mag it took a million passes over to get it to go in. I did the small circle thing. I know this takes practice, and am pretty pleased with the end result, but looking forward to getting better inks soon. Maybe I do not have the needle out enough? It is about 1/16th. I was expecting to make ground beef of my leg with all the passes but amazingly I didn't. Is red tricky in general?
Can someone please tell me the difference between the 'velvet' type and dispersion colors. I am hoping the dispersion are brighter and not so soft looking and go in better.
My husband, Vincent, and I are stuck in rural Wisconsin and have gotten quite bored with our Katrina vacation as we call it. Before we left New Orleans we had decided to try our hand at tattoing. Ordered the simplest kit from Superior after our exile to nowhere. Not doing this totally blindly. We have been reading, and watching instructional videos and observing in studios for awhile now. Started with the rubber fake, oh so nothing like the real thing skins before attacking ourselves. Found this site recently and so glad we did. Too afraid to post anywhere else.

I ordered some Millenium (Mom's) from Cam's (sorry Needlejack but they were discontinuing that brand and had an awesome sale on them), and I've noticed they are the same , most of the popular colors are alot thinner than the others. I'm not a ink chemist, so I don't know if this is normal. Maybe someone with more knowledge can explain why this is.
