View Full Version : Another mag question.
theres alot on here about mags but not alot on how to use them. Everyone warns about tearing up the skin with them but how the heck should you use them? i would like to try some out, i would use them on myself first im not worried if i tear my own skin up, but dont know if you use them like a round when filling if you use small circles or what, im guessing since the needles are stacked you dont need to move them in a tight circular motion. any help would be appreciated, i plan on buying some mags and tubes at the end of the week probably start out with 5s. I fill in with 8 rds now in larger areas, i use 5s for lineing and small filling, i just want to add some more needle groupings and sizings to my aresenal. The reason i use such small needle groupings is ive had several tattoos done with a homemade gun, guitar string for a needle, and was impressed with the work the homemade gun did, i seem to fill in better with the 5 then the 8.

Probably the 5 mag should be the first choice. It's very similar to using a four flat but lays in ink much better. The main thing to remember while using a magnum needle grouping is to watch closely what you're doing and try to keep from going over the same area more than three times. If your machine is setup correctly you shouldnt have to make more than one or two passes to get solid color fill.
The general rule is the same as with flats or rounds for that matter. A slightly slower machine with a little less voltage for a softer hit. Hold the tube at as close to a 45 degree angle to the skin as possible and push the tip forward in small tight circles for solid color. Wider faster circles for color or shade fade effects.
thanks for the input ive never used a flat, just the rounds so far. i fill at a 45 with the rounds and notice that all the needles dont go in the skin so i figured a mag would put the ink in alot faster and smoother and be able to get all the needles in the skin.

I am still trying to work with mags. I know you can do some pretty cool stuff, some even line with them! But I still get great results with flats, I think you just have to try em all out and see what works best for you. Good Luck.
i just ordered up some 5 mags along with a bunch of other supplies from Jack, i will post again when i try the mags out and let you know how it went.

I would love to see a pic with this technique.
Im not picturing this at all how and above all why would you line with a mag?

Lining with a mag is a very good way to fatten up parts of an outline that need to be bolder than the rest . Think of the mag needle as a caligraphy pen. If you hold it so that your needles are aligned with the line then move it following the curve of the line you will get a graduating width as the broad side of the needle head comes into play.
