if i do a tribal piece and want to shade it should i water my black dow or use grey wash?

no worries i'll try the distilled water first cause iv'e got a small amount of tribal ink left on a bottle i'll mix that till i get the desired result

I cant answer this question because your desired affect isnt coming through loud and clear...the way u have explained your question is not detailed enough I guess, u want to wash out a tribal piece???? and I am not really sure what u mean by " left on a bottle" it doesnt sound safe from my standpoint. Sorry Im no help and dont understand your situation.

soory i meant in a bottle and i am wanting to put shading round some of the edges to create more depth to the piece
i hope this explains it more
also is it ok to mix with distilled whitch hazel?

Never tried witch hazel..yet.. but distilled water,yes , one small drop of your wash out color in a ink cap, the rest distilled water.... mix....if u have never tried this u have guts, it will give u a light color/gray when applied, Im not sure if thats the effect u want, the way you have explained it, it seems like your going with a feathered effect in which case I use sort of a whip shading technique, I have also used a light coat of vasoline in the area Im working on, and dabbed it with distilled water and brushed out full strength black/color to create a smooth tranistion from dark to light, hope this helps.

there is info on mixing black ink five threads down in this same section,
read it it has good recipies for different shades of grey wash for shading.
