I recently had surgery for an umbilical hernia and anyone who works in a hospital knows this takes a while to heal so during this time I banned myself from the tattooing in fact i banned myself from the tattoo work area completely untill fully released from the surgeon (that is why i have lived on the forum the past month and not tattooing. which brings me to my post..... Common sense!

I chose to stay away from tattooing and my work area during my recovery mainly out of concern for exposing myself or a client to the risk of infection from my open inscision. I still did research on tattooing and BBP/CC, tattoo history while in recovery so i stayed busy in the tattoo world but just not inking. I am sure the medical professionals here will agree that i made the right choice. It wasn't a hard choice just common sense. That got me to thinking about other reasons that it would be wise to take a vacation from actually tattooing. That should come to most as common sense.

For instance would you take a few days off if you had a cold? I would sneezing and coughing all over the place cant be good for the open wound that is a tattoo. not to mention the cc issues.

Would you take a day off if you were overly stressed, cafeened out, or really tired? I would because you aren't going to be on top of your game and when you are driving ink into someones flesh you need to be focused on what you are doing.

do you agree? disagree? what common sense alarms do you use to tell you when its ok or not ok to be tattooing?

well i just started tattooing, i tattoo out of my home as a hobby, if i was feeling under the weather or had surgery i would wait until im 100% before i inked anyone. But i also dont make a living out of tattooing im sure not alot of tattoo artists can just take time off when they dont feel like they could applly a tattoo to 100% of there abilities.

if i'm not feeling well (got a cold , exhausted , burnt ) i'll re-schedule or just tell them what the deal is . I let them know I want to give them 100% and they're usually good with that . If not ...next !!

I agree, before a scheduled tattoo, I run this checklist out in my mind, everthing has to be checked and ready to go....mostly for my clients safety, everthing needs to be 100%, if not, whether its my client, or myself, or even family (I live with a wife and daughter) I re-schedule, I'll tell the client that things are not up-to-par, their good with that, they know me and the work I do, and respect my decision, and they know they will get better craftmanship/art if things are at 100%.
