I float so I usually hang about a millimeter or a hair less with the A-bar up.. for both lining and shading but that's just me.

Hey Danny, Your post sounds like you're getting ready to work on someone and you don't sound too sure of your set up. It should be a looooong time before you start working on someones skin. We're not here to discourage but help as much as we can. Read all the posts, get familiar with your equipment & Be sure you understand CC and its consequences. before you lay that needle on someones skin. Chances are your questions are already answered somewhere on here. If not ask.

Danny, I have to agree with the Capt. on this one. Questions such as yours are definitely answered in here somewhere and are definitely not asked by someone ready to work on skin yet. Not being pricks just being honest. To read all the posts in here first shows dedication and desire to become a tattoo artist. This is what we suggest for you. No hard feelings bro.

Go back through and read past postings, not that we don't want to help you out, its just some suggested reading for you to check out.

The amount that you hang the needle out of the tube if at all depends mainly on the type of set up you have. "Assuming that you are firstly holding the machine correctly" and not like a pencil. Then look at your stroke. Try adjusting the needle grouping in the tube until it just meets the tip of the tip. Not hanging out at all!
Then run the machine. As you run the machine put a *Slight* amount of tension on the needle bar with your finger as to simulate the resistance that the skin will add to the length that is actually penetrating the skin. Now, look at how far the needle grouping is sticking out of the tube, then adjust accordingly. You are only going to be in the 4th dermal layer. As long as your stretch is proper(tight as hell) and the machine isn't set to hit too hard then expect to see about 1 1/6th and 1 32/nd to be hanging during the run. If you are riding the tube, so to speak. I would *not* reccomend floating the needle until you are used to pulling consistant lines. For a novice to float the needle can be detrimental to your learning. Re; Blow outs, and wobbles, and dropped lines fron "inconsistant line weights.
Set it up properly first then do like I suggested, you will only barely see the needle grouping as you are pulling the line. That way even if you bottom out on the tube you will still not Blow out.
Hope this helped.
