i just did a tattoo last weekend on a buddy, i did a generic happy face on each kneecap in a thick solid black outline. it didnt seem like i went over it too much but hes having problems with it now. the its scabbinng up a little and some spots leaked a little puss. should i be worried about this??? there on his knee caps so i figured its just not healing properly because they stretch when he walks plus his pants rubbing on it. any advice???
What kind of aftercare is he doing? Is he putting any kind of ointment/lotion on it?

when i finished it i put a&d ointment and told him to use that. a couple of days later he told me he used regular lotion for 2 days then he switched to bacitracin.

The skin around the knees is very thin. If you worked it pretty heavy to get it solid black then you probably overworked the skin. There's also a lot of constant movement of the skin in that area so it's probably scabbing then getting re-exposed by the constant motion. Might take a bit longer than usuall to heal. Tell him to stay with the lotion. And to keep it clean with soap and water to prevent infection.

if it's scabbing bad he's gonna loose some ink but as long as it heals ok you can touch up in a few weeks
