what can i do to get cleaner more solid outlines? my lines are pretty straight and look good except for sometimes in the middle of a long line there will be a small area of the line that looks like the ink didnt catch. how many volts should i be running on outlines and does the voltage differ when i use a different wrap coil?

Are you both riding the needle or riding the tube ? If riding the needle you are probably lifting off ever so slightly while repositioning your hand half way through a long line, if you do ride the needle try to ride the tube just to see if it still happens. I outline at between 6 - 7 volts but it can vary on what machine you are using and how it is set up.

How often are you loading back up on ink in the ink well, sort of sounds like your running light on ink or slightly lifting your hand.

i load up on ink after almost every other line, depending on how big the lines are

I had a little isses like this, might want to watch your angles also, if you drop to far down below 90deg you could be lifting the needle out of the skin.

Just something else to watch.

it also may be the way that you stretch the skin on long lines. The skin can unstretch in the centers ie the needle not penitrating the skin correctly. and causeing the faded centerline. thats why we start of with smaller pieces so that we learn the different skin types and to feal the machine.
for instance stretch the skin on your thigh do an inch, two, three you will notice the skin in the center will start looking poofy. That is were the stretch is filling it self in the other surrounding skin. The skin is too loose through that area and causes the needle to bounce instead of penitrating the proper depth.
On long lines try the three point stretch or depending on where it is located. stretch the area like the loose scruff of a bicept.
I hope this helps ya.
