Most machines are set up with a short front spring on liners and long front spring on shaders.Mostly goes by what the person behind the machine is most comfortable working with. There is alot of info in the forums more in depth on setting up machines and all.Lots involved setting up machine, short stroke, long stroke, different gauges of springs 16-18-20,take your time and you will gain all the info you are looking for right here in this forum. It gets better and better the more you learn.

Hi Emerika,I started off using lots of black and grey on pieces when i first started out tattooing.I ordered colors a few months back and things are getting better as far as shading.I started out with one machine also and it was tuff, due to lack of knowledge.I keep tattoo pieces small and didnt go large.Anyway, after saving up and ordering a machine for shading along with some books and vidioes and this forum, everything has been getting better day by day.I am still learning alot and have a long ways to go,but im happy and like the way things just keep falling into place from learning and re-reading and studying and drawing and doing it over and over.I love it.Anyway i wish you the best and if you let these guys and ladies here know some more info as far as the machine you are using they may be able to help you out further.I can only answer some questions by sharing what works for me due to the fact i am still training myself.I found that by shading with my machine a softer hit laid the ink in there just fine, longer stroke and less voltage, long front spring, slightly bent.Lots of info here,i just felt that my first reply was a little brief and i dont want to sound rude, really good people here.Needle Jacks has all the equipment you need also, its good to have a spare set of springs along with alot of other spare parts and equipment.Sorry so long-I Love Tattooing-

use .018 front and back.u must adjust the liner so it runs faster with a short throw and the shader has a long throw and runs slower. put 3 rubber bands on it when shading will also slow it down a bit.
