View Full Version : Proper use of magnums?

:?: I ordered some 7mags to try out. I have used nothing so far but 14RS, for everything. Shading and coloring. Where I took my apprenticeship, all that was ever used was 14's. I know that mags as well as flats can seriously scar someone if not used properly. So someone please explain the proper technique (direction/motion) as well as where you run your machine. My shader(12wrap) I generally run at 5-6v my machine I use for coloring (10wrap) I run around 6-8v. I'm sure I can tweak either of these machines to run the proper set up for mags. I'm just not sure what that is. Should I run it just as I do for 14rounds? Should I use the same small circle coloring technique I use with my rounds, or will this cause unnecessary trauma to the skin? I strictly follow the three pass rule of thumb when packing in color, and this is usually sufficient to obtain good coverage. Can a mag be used in this manner also? Some one please put me on the right path to magnum enlightenment. Thanks. :?
hey bro, i bought some mags awhile back and tried them on myself they work good but run the machine slow, its very easy to over work the skin i did in a few spots but im glad i tried them out on myself first, they pack in the color real good and fast, ive only been using rounds up to this point also so using a mag was alittle different.

Appreciate the reply. Are you using the same hand motion (small circles) or should I be using more of a whip (brush) stroke? I have heard never run a flat or mag in the same direction as the needles are layed out, or it acts like a razor blade and can quickly do some fubar stuff.
i use slow circles more like an oval, i was scared of the needles acting like a razor blade but i ran it back and forth just to find out on my own leg and it didnt act like a razor, didnt feel to good but it didnt slice the skin open, just run the machine slow and use slow circles/ovals. The brush/whip stroke might work but i never tried that.
