What is the difference between riding the needle and riding the tube?
I would expect one would be where you can see the needle and the other would be where the tube is against the skin so you can't see the needle.

riding the needle as you say takes lots of practice.you can easily do damage an mess up a tattoo if you dont know how to do it.understanding the different skin types helps alot

like said before riding the tube is when the needle is in the tube while the machine is off but out just enough to get into the skin when the machine is on, riding the needle is having the needle out when the machine is off. i also agree with the diamond tip tubes, which is why i dont use them. I ride the needle because when i ride the tube all the ink dumps out of the tube as soon as it hits the skin but it works good for large areas as its easier to tell when you need more ink. When you ride the needle make sure you keep an eye on how far into the skin its going and keep an even depth or the color wont be even, and/or cause trauma to the skin.

riding the tube insures a consistent penetration depth of the needle effortlessly, assuming you let the machine do the work and aren't barring down on the skin, some people just can't tattoo without seeing the needles, so if you ride the tips, work carefully so the depth is consistent, otherwise you get fat to skinny, to skinny to fat lines......

I work with Adam aka MontanPiercer (I can't ride the tube if my dick was in a vice). Every dog chases a different tail.

lmao.
I hear ya there. I ride the needle as well.
I see the down side of riding the tube every day. Day in and day out. some people tend to get lazy with it. They will set a moderate depth that works on "most" <--- Keyword , then just hold it at a 90 and letter rip, or trace away. IMHO,
getting tooo comfortable with it can cause some keyloided skin (scarred and or raised lines) "Especially on darker flesh" which is definately a B***h when it comes to cover up time. Personally I like to keep my nutz out of the vise!

Way I was taught was to set the needle up so it only just pokes out when the needle is in, and ride the tube.
What's the setup for riding the needles?

i get more accuracy riding the needle,i can see what its doing or what its about to do,you have to learn to control the touch and depth.riding the needle you learn quickly when your going too deep

Also riding the needle leaves way less of a mess on the skin (ink)

I was never taught to ride the tip, in fact, I reckon our head tattooist would maim me if I did :).....There is no way I could achieve an accurate line without being able to see the needle.... Took me ages to get the depth right, but the struggle was well worth it.

I guess it is the Jedi Force then, as I have no trouble with mess or pulling a straight line riding the tube <shrugs>
