I feel the need to chime in here.. I know this is just a joke thread.. but that term.. "emo" is being used out of context more and more every day..

"Emo" is a musical sub-genre.. its an offshoot of hardcore.. and, real emo died about 7-10 years ago.

The stuff being called "emo" these days.. (ex. Taking Back Sunday, Hawthorne Heights, Fallout Boy, etc...) is nothing like emo... simply put, its nothing more than whiney pop music.

But, regardless of that fact.. Its the context thing that bugs me the most.. this joke is a classic example.. it refers to a person being an "emo" .. which makes no sense.. there is no such thing as an emo.

To put this into context..Let me ask you this:
would you call someone who likes jazz.. A "Jazz"?
how about someone who likes rock? would they in fact be a "rock"?

The answer is no.

Dont take this the wrong way.. I get the joke.. and i agree that these kids are candy asses.. and you probably heard the term from someone else.. so I dont blame you.. you were just passing on a joke you heard.. thats all good..
I just hate how the term is misused, and becoming a subculture that is completely oblivious to its own roots..

yeah its all good and you are right, I did hear this joke from somebody. As a matter of fact, I first heard of the term emo from a friend like a couple of years ago so its all new to me. 7-10 years ago i think i was listening to raw hip hop but thanks for the knowledge on its history. isnt 'emo' derived from the word emotional? the bands you mentioned before is suited in this category and the look they display is imitated by the selected few of the general public thus they are labeled emo. an unfortunate fate for its actual roots. I used to listen to alot of punk so i guess i used to be 'punk'

papadurivage,
you are correct about the origin of the term emo but around here, (northern CA.) "emo's" are a growing sub-culture that seems to have evolved quite a lot from the original "emo music" and its fans of the late 80's and early 90's. Kind of like the way the hippies of the late 70's were a far cry from the hippies of the late 60's.

From what I gather from my teenage sons and their friends, emo's seem to be coming from or associating with the "goth" types. Although they are a minority they are growing in numbers, at least for now. This could just be a local trend, but I'm in a rural area, so if it's growing here I would guess it's happening to some degree, all over the country.

Then again, I'm 47 and almost completely out of the loop with current teen culture. So what do I know.

see my original post.. thats not what the emo movement was about at all.. these kids that call themselves "emo's" now dont havea a clue what it was about .. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of them couldnt even name a real emo band.

lol EMO and goth are actually alot different. lets see for starters..... emo have that hair cut, even the woman.

some kinda have it even shorter in back....a reverse mullet.... i guess
http://www.blackvelvetmagazine.com/bv43benjorgensenarmorforsleep.jpg

uhmm.. you have to be skinny to be emo if not your just a poser.

its pretty much law to cut yourself if your emo and a choice with others such as goth.

goths can rock out at a concert, emo's are suppose to do nothing more then shuffle and head bang (alot dont though)

theres more just gotta think.

and you will never see a true emo smile. for anything.

Sailor Jerry and Emo, used in the same sentence.....You should be banned just for that referrence....

But its kinda the same as every swingin hollywood dick and cunt wearin "VonDutch" clothing and not having a f'in clue who VonDutch was.....
