What do you use to line?

I was just curious. Whats sizes do you guys use to line. I use a 3RL.
I had just bought a bunch of 1L out of curiousity. To my suprise... I hated it.

What type of needle size do you use to line?

the design size and amount of detail pretty much dictates the liner grouping for me, the bigger the tattoo the bigger the grouping, small hearts, flowers and cherries on a ankle or more intricate celtic I probably would use a 3. for an average 3"x 3" tattoo I would probably go with a 5 or 7, big tribals and tattoos where you want a bold line like "New school and grafitti" probably a 7 or 9 thats just my preferance though. There are situations where you might want to change grouping sizes such as a snake, dragon or coi where the scales get smaller as you go down the tail or for fine cracks in skulls or stonework. Basicly dont get stuck using one size for lining let the piece decide what you should use. you have more than one pen size in your drawing kit dont you? then why not with your tattoo rig?

Gremlin, I definetly AGREE!! Every design is different and that should be remembered when selecting needle groupings... I personally like 5L to 3L unless like gremlin said,, when tight detail is involved.. I never use a 1L for anything really!! just my 2cents!

my 1st attempt at tattooing my leg was single needle----talk about a mess--------my artist told me to use a 5 or 3, I'm parcial to 5's for most work. like everyone is saying theres going to be times when you need thicker or thinner lines ---the more work ya do you'll figure out what ya need for the design. good luck

again it all depends on the design. small pieces and portraits i use 3rl and the majority i like 5rl. i havent yet gotten too bold with my lines.

hey people ..just got back from Joe's ,,,a real good time ,,,i've been tattooing a few years , and i still get fooled ...
i tattooed my girl last night (twice) ,,had to stop and go bigger on the liner needles on both pieces ,,,
if i havent tattooed the person , i'll use a smaller grouping, in case they are a wiggler ,,
...well i ended up using a tight 14 on the girl for a pretty big cover up on her butt, thigh and leg , started out using a 8 liner on her ...hehe

i like 3 & 5rl for the most part however i sometimes use 7rs and larger groups
bassically what the peice calls for

U cant really talk about different sizes, if u order from one company u can get really detailed with 5rl and with another company 5rl can suddenly do really "thick lines"...

i use most 5 rl and 9 round liner, and sometimes 9 rounds..
