I have not done much bold color work...O.K....This is my first excursion outside of Black and Gray (gotta be able to satisfy all tastes that the customers bring with them...)

3-Round Liner and 6 Flat Shader, Millenium Black Onyx, Pretty Boy Blue, Ectoplasmic Green, and some blends of those colors...etc...

She was thrilled (it was her second Tattoo, but her first by me), but my constant criticism of my own work lets me see some of my small flubbs.

Holy Cripes, I look forward to the day that I can do super premium line work...Aargh!

Oh well...the customer insisted that I do another butterfly on her (a chrome-looking one) so when that comes around, I will post pics. I suppose that if the customer walks out insisting on getting another Tattoo from you, those self criticisms only pay off in better future work through continual improvement.

Initial Work...excuse those friggin' lines...(in an Obi-Wan voice I softly tell you..."Those lines are the cleanest ever." You reply to me in a dreamy voice "Yes, those lines are clean.")

The end product, with some color.

There it is.:???:

If you dirty dipped as you were going along it would of made a huge difference and given a good variation.

very true inkster.... when using diffrent colors its always a good idea to stop and clean the tube and needle with distilled water to get any ink out of the ink resivour and off the tip and needle, do that before you use a diffrent color everytime and your good to go. it looks good to me though dude keep it up

I think Inkster meant when looking at a decent gradient then blend the colours rather that rinsing after each one?

What I mean is after colouring one piece of green, wipe the tip only, do not rinse and dip into white, this will give an amzing gradient, once that little section completed, wipe the tip and carry out with green again and repeat the previous. It is a little time consuming but the reults are well worth it.

Hi caz, I dropped you an e mail a couple of days ago, did you get it?

yup working with earth colors and doing that is kewl but its also important to rinse when working with other colors... like black and white for instance if your doing tribal with white effects inside the tribal and you have done the black then dip into the white without rinsing it will come out grey instead of white, same as his butterfly is green with black.... if he did the black first then straight into the green it would be really dark green. just a reminder thats all lol

That technique also works great for flames going from red to orange to yellow and white! Just my 2 cents

Thanks for all the feedback and the tip on "dirty dippin'"...that actually sounds a little faster and better than what I have been doing...grabbing new colors to fill new caps and going through the process of stirring blends in the caps with toothpicks...until I think I have it "right".

The next color piece I do I will try the "Dirty Dip" on a color gradient.

"dirty dip" sound like a great Idea. I'll also have to give this one a try.

I agree with this technique..i was trying to mix in individual cups before.. Brandon Bond talks about this alot in his seminars.. if you get a chance to attend one do it... he even brings beer for you to drink during the class.. some people talk shit about him, but he was a pretty cool guy in my opinion... and an absolute marketing machine!!!
