I made one too. I found a sign from a old auto body shop. it already had the switch and a place for light bulbs. i just put in those florescent ones and took out the sign and replaced it with plexiglass. It works great!
It is also pretty big (40X20) so I can use it for big designs.

Mines 24" X 30", just jigsawed the countertop (like installing a kitchen sink) and routed the edges to recess for the width of the light board. Mounted a florescent tube up underneath. Works like a charm and doubles as my drawing table.

what thickness of perplex/plexiglass would you reccomend ? i have seen some cheap clear ccrylic glazing sheets but most are 2mm thick and the one i was thinking of getting is 3ft x 4ft. is 2mm thick enough for something that size or will it wobble and dip when i put weight on it ?

Mine just got here today. It took 3 days I have to give it to the ebay seller. Over here in an art store I usually frequent for my black books and pencils wanted me to fork over $116 duckies for the same one. And this one is new in box even had that blue sticky tape over the drawing area. Check it out.
