I play jazz and classical solo guitar (both electric and acoustic) and dabble in everything from metal to country (it all is a lot more related than it seems) Been working on minor augmented (Jazz minor) scales and movable, invertable octaves. Do a lot of tapping, holding a big chord, strum it, and tap a melody over the top with my picking fingers (always fingerstyle) good results! Starting to use effects again, I always go between clean and heavily processed. Lots of time based effects, delays, echoes, chorus and such. Trying to wrangle all my influences into a definable package, a strange brew indeed! I'll try to get some music up soon, but I'm computer illiterate. I still record to a fostex 4 track cassette recorder, so converting to computer files may take some work. Any tips on how to do that?

the best way to convert them from the fostex format, which if i remember right records at a faster speed than normal tape deck so if you play straight off the 4 track without bouncing to a regular deck will sound like alvin and the chipmunks. ( I may be wrong though its been a while since i used a fostex) but the best way I think is to go from your final mixdown tapes into a D/A converter like the M-audio or edroil units into a DAW workstation and throuh editing software like cubase, or protools,

The system im using is currently is my effex rack into, guitar head/cab, out of the pre out of the head into a M-audio firewire a/d/a converter into cubase LE and finaly into my cd burner on my puter. I still have some tascam stuff i dont use much anymore like a DA-30 MKII and a DA-88 multitracker.

Go computer based recording and you wont go back!!!! Just think 256 tracks of clean digital power in a dektop computer instead of a studio full of stuff.

What gear do you guys play? I got a "special" beat up strat copy (Austin) that just sings! Only one I've found that sounds this good. Took the middle pickup out and wired the bridge in reverse to create a big humbucker (kind of) I play through a 1970 fender bass amp, all tube. I also got a Crate that sucks and a plethora of pedals, a tubescreamer, a dano chorus, a dano fab tone, a morley lil alligator volume pedal (love that thing), a 1969 original crybaby (great sound, but a little delicate) I also use a toneworks Pandora box (mainly as a tuner) and an old Multi effects processor from ART.

My wife used to have a Dean Cadillac, we loved that axe! Somebody broke into our house and stole it, my '72 J-bass, and our Gibson Hummingbird Acoustics (which had been through a lot and it showed) Strangley they left our crappy Alvarez and Ibanez acoustics and my lil homemade fretless bass. Makes me think whoever stole our gear must have been a musician to know the differences. All of them were more than wore in. Thank god they didn't take my Ampeg Blue Diamond Jet (irreplaceble). Bummed me out so much I didn't play for about 3 months.

i have been playing the bass for 3 yrs. what should i get for an affect pedal?
i would like one that reproduces more than one sound and at a fairly
reasonable price. can anyone suggest a decent setup, or what to look for?
new or used it doesnt matter, just a name brand and model # would help.
thank you.

If you want to change the "color" of your sound, get a wah pedal (any brand) It will instantly funkify your bass lines. To improve your tone, get a compressor, I can't live without mine. I keep it on all the time while I play bass. I don't especially like those multi-effect floor pedals, they sound a lil computery to me.

i understand everything except for the compressor??
are the single wah pedals like $30 or am i looking at the wrong pedals?
does it have to be a bass specific pedal or do they work with elec guitars to.
what does a compressor do tighten the sound?what does it look like and cost?
sorry to ask here but the music store down the street is full of
employees that want to sell you the best of everything and dont even want to explain or talk about the everyday ordinary equipment you can get
thats not encased in a shrine display.

hey guys, nice to see there are other musicians in here as well.
im in the middle of re-finishing my guitar, thought i would give a little visual of what it will look like when done, dont have any pictures yet but will get some.
first off, i have an Eastwood, by Oscar Schmidt, very nice guitar for only $190, back in 1998 i believe. it was standard black laquer finish, with white pick-guard, and had a single humbucker pick-up near the neck, and 1 back at the bridge, and a double pick-up in the center. standard selector switch, and knobs, 1 volume, 2 tone.

now for what it is about to look like. it has been sanded down, wood sealer has been added, and is primed white. i am going to spray it california orange.
it will be black inside the cavity(where all the pick-ups and things go). im making a new pick-guard out of clear plexi-glass. inside the cavity will be orange l.e.d lights which will be tied into the wires suppling the pick-ups, with a small toggle switch for on-off function. now as far as i know, this has never been done before, so im not sure if there is going to be interference to the pick-ups, but we will soon find out. after the body is sprayed im going to put a tribal skull design on the body. as for the neck, i was going to remove the frets, sand it, re-stain it with an orange wood dye(not bright orange), and put a chinese dragon inlay on it, starting from the 4th fret, and ending at the 10th fret. this part is still up in the air as to whether or not im going to do it, becuase it will take a long time to dremel the pattern into the neck, and applying the pearl flake, but we'll see how everything else goes first.

when it is done i will post a pick, so everyone can see.

Sounds really cool! I build axes also, just finished my wife's guitar about a month ago. Solid aged brazillian (Real!) mahogany, top cap of australian lacewood (a piece my dad had saved since about 1966) I laid all the componets out of her Aria Pro 2 into it. Oh, the light thing has been done before, check out some classic Rickenbachers (very rare) and a few Fender Starcasters (even rarer).

I got some new recording gear for Christmas!! I got a cool Akai 1/4" tape four track, and Cubase LE. I love old analog gear, but have never used a digital studio so Cubase is driving me crazy! Anyone else use Cubase?
