How do I relieve intense pain? Should I? I was told by the local medical supply company that I needed a prescription for anything stronger than solorcane(which is crap, it has menthol in it!) They won't even sell me smelling salts here in Texas anymore!!! Do suppliers cover this? Or am I breaking a law by having these things in stock without prescriptions?

you can use local anesthetic though it isnt that safe if you dont know what your doing... and i dont mean tattooing wise. when you rub the cream on to numb the skin then apply stencil etc etc when you start tattooing the cream ( anesthetic ) can be pushed under the skin by the needle so you really need to know the effects it can have. only one place here uses local anesthetic and they dont advertise it or even tell you, they will only give it to you if you ask them and they usually wont do it til they have at least did a few lines on you without it too see if you really cant stand the pain. its kind of a last resort to use it. also diffrent lubricants give diffrent feeling. i noticed baby oil burns like hell, i had to have one guy wash it off me cus it burnt so bad and iv never complained of pain or said ouch in any of my sittings lol, once he washed it off and continued it didnt hurt half as much. personally id never use any anesthetic or numbing cream because the pain is part of the process and experience of getting a tattoo... in my eyes its how you earn the right to wear it proudly

i agree with Krazy 100%. If you cant take the pain take a break or dont get tattoed. All my ink hurt in various degrees but the pain is part of the process.

What type of pain are we talking about? Pain related to tattooing? A broken knee, swollen pancreas?

People have used xylocaine jelly in the tattoo process and I think one of our administrators outlined the process fairly well, its in the archives.

Xylocaine, Lidocaine, Marcaine....all of which can be used but arent generally recommended.

A little more information related to what type of pain your talking about.

I was asking how to deal with a clients reaction to the tattoo process. Lining out 3 flowers on her calf gave her fits of pain. She said it hurt almost as much as having a baby! Just plain old tattoo pain.

the most you can really do is keep her relaxed and if its still too much well shoot theres not much to do as the tattoo is already started. As for the child birth thing that sounds like a load of crap. i mean im not a women so i know nothing of birth pains but it seems like squeezing something the size of a melon out of something the size of a lemon would hurt a whole hell of alot more than a tattoo.

Great Point. I hadnt even thought of that. calf definitely shouldnt be as painful as shes describing. the lining process can be a bitch, hopefully its just her being a drama queen and not a sign of something more serious.

Okay, I have a question dealing with tattooing pain also. I've mentioned in another thread of a friend, trying to get a trible back peice done. The artist is working on the lining, and has only a small point done. She says it hurts more then anything eles shes ever felt.

Now she dosen't jump with the machine running, or when the artist first gets to work its about 30 seconds later, that its to much for her to handel.

During one brake, she was complain of back spasims. Which she gets quite often, and i was wondering if maybe that wasn't causing the problem. she can feel the spasm coming and says it dosn't feel like shes geting them during the tattoo. But you can tell just by looking at her, thats she clenching all her back muscles.

She really wants this tattoo, as its going to cover up an home done single needle mess, that she has running up her spine. We've tryed everything we can think of to make her more confortable, changed locations, found her something to hold/bite on diffrent music, a friend all kinds of things.

The artist suggested trying a diffrent spot. (she started at the bottom, just above where you pants would rest) Is that spot sometimes problmatic? Shes a little hesitant to try a spot higher up, because she dosn't want a bunch of random lines, if she really can't handel it. (more then she already has)

This is become quite frustrating for everyone envolved, exsepcially the girl, Is there anything else we could try?

now im not one to tell someone how to get around pain, because im a firm believer in only getting a tattoo if you can handle it , as its part of the experience - however in extreme cases there is a product called blu- gel topical numbing gel. its available thru most tattoo supply houses - but i dont know if needle jacks has it try that it may help.- if you cant find it pm me and ill tell you where to get it-

I've hear of the blue gel, but i don't know much about it. Something like that might help. Although i do know alot of topicals wont work because they can't penitrate the skin, dose blue gel work well for that? This is quite a large tattoo. It runs pritty much the whole length of her spine. I've thought about starting in a diffrent place, athough being on the spine, Personally I think it would only hurt more the further up you go... I guess shes just over sensitive..

That is the unfortunate part of home done tattoos. They often need to be covered up. Also, the spine is a more painful are to tattoo. Was she advised of this? Personally, I advise against a topical cream and do not use them myself. Nor ever seen them used. She is just going to have to suck it up.

If this is a reputable artist the technique should be sound. Usually adverse pain indicates depth issues. As such, if there are no blown lines and they dont appear to be a mirky downtoned black then she is just a wimp. Sorry I couldnt be of more help.

now like i said i dont use the stuff but a lady freind of mine had me order some for her , she was getting inked in the same spot as your freind and at the time i was an apprentice so i didnt get to actually use it ,but she seemed to take it better for her. they make a before procedure and a during procedure spray , anyways , i think the pain is all part of it and its always worth it in the end , .....
give her a vicodin or something,
good luck-w.j

The lines look great, theres now blow outs or anything. They way she describle the pain it sounds like, her skin was being sliced, but that dosen't appear to be the case either. Like you siad, it is quite possible she is just a whimp... I don't like topicals at all, for anything for that matter. Just my personal opinion. Then everyone dose have a diffrent pain tolerence. I read the artical in the link, and it dose have some very good advice. I'll show it too the artist also as she is very open minded about all the possibilitys. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how she deals witht he rest of the out line. I read some place, that a good massage would help lossen up the muscles, and help relax people before a tattoo...has any one else hear of anyone actually trying this, and did i help...

seriously one of the scariest things ive seen being sold on BME.com is an injectable anaesthetic that any tom dick or harry can buy.

I think the best remedy seemed to be to suck it up, get the lines done, and leave her with a half finished tattoo for 2 weeks. Now she wants to get it finished and doesn't think it hurt as bad as she acted. Funny how a little time changed her feelings. I think it must be mostly mental anyway. I mean, it does hurt in varying degrees, but not that bad. I've noticed that first timers always seem to complain about pain the most. I've also noticed that they seem to claim it hurts more when they can see what I'm doing. Just observations. Anyone else notice trends in the clients who complain the most about pain from tattooing?

It could have just been the lining. One thing ive noticed is that people mainly bitch about how much it hurts when theyre getting the outline of their tattoo done.

Just do the pre-flight Mr. T trick and she'll be fine. Seriouosly, don't, especially if she's as ugly and bling-ed out as Mr. T.

Give her a pen and paper and have her write what she's feeling while she's getting poked. Haha! Fuckin' Bigfoot Ale talkin again- okay I'm good.

It's not like this is her first tattoo.. she had the "homemade mess" done before this... was there alot of scarring from that? I've had a couple of retouches where the original had left some keloid scarring and the client complained of more pain in those areas. Also, be sure the skin is stretched nicely - it seems like a better stretch equals less pain. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still a newbie myself.

You'll find that the individual pain tollerence level really differs from individual. I had a couple come in on there way back from Sturgis one year. The dude was this huge bad ass looking guy, the chick, a tiny petite babe. Both first tattoos, chick goes first, no problem, took it like a champ, hubby rolled his eyes and drooled on himself for a minute from me just touching him with the gun. She took about 10 min to do the tiny tat, he took almost an hour.

women do have a better pain tollorence.. thats why we have the peroids and the babys! all u lot get lumbered with are wet dreams!

but the girl with the back tattoo sounds like a total pain in the arse!
the best cure for her is to give her a good left hook.. then she will have something other than her back to worry about!

and i have been tattooed everywhere but my neck and face.. and personally think none of the pain from any of them where worth actually complaining about. that doesnt mean they wernt sore and some times annoying.. but its part of the process!
no matter how much a tattoo hurt i would be to embarresed to let the tattooist know it! as someone else said.. u just gotta suck it up!

and no tattoo feels anything like shiting out a baby!

oh jesus i just cant stand wingers lol ! my bloke loves tattoos.. gets massive parts of his on going tribal done at a time.. then complains about the pain for 3 weeks after lol! i tell him he sounds like a fuckin winney old women and to suck it up!

if i had to tattoo someone who complained abnormally about the pain.. like the doll we where talkin about i would tell her that i was going as easy as i could and if she wanted pain i would give her some! i think that would shut em up.. plus i would make em pay up front and if they didnt shut up i would tell them to find another "more patient" tattooist! u usually find if someone pays up front they wont quite till they get there moneys worth.. and if u tell em how it is they wont complain "as much"

A lot of it is in the mind. They are concentrating on the pain and when the needle hits it seems intensified. Try to relax them with conversation. Get them talking about pleasantries, their hobbies, anything they enjoy. Then start with light short strokes until they seem comfortable. Then work your way into regular strokes. Most of the topicals wash off as your working and don't last long. This makes it worse when the sensation returns.
