Okay, so today I get to do my first tattoo on living flesh. Dunno who was more worried; me or my guinea pig. Long story short: When I get to work, she's jumping around so bad, I couldn't hold a decent line for love or money. I kept stopping, she kept apologizing, etc. Instead of overworking the skin trying to pull a straight line, I told her to come back in a couple of weeks and we'll have another go. She's my ex-wife, so she's around frequently.
I double-checked everything midway to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything crucial, like needle depth, etc., but no joy. Needless to say, I'm quite disappointed, but not beaten. A pic follows:

Any thoughts on how to keep her from twitching around so I can get some work done?

I thought it looked awesome for working on a squigly woman...if she settles down you should be able to touch it up easily since most of the squiggles are inside the design...other then that I have no comments..

Not her first. She had a fairly elaborate multi-colored butterfly about 4x4 inches on her shoulderblade a few years ago. I was present for that, and she said it didn't hurt at all. This one is on her hip, about 1.5x1.5, and she said it hurt like the devil. She's not exactly a petite woman, and I really had to work to get a good stretch. I wonder if that could have any bearing on it?
Thanks for the kind words, all. When I get it touched up, I'll let you know.

Looks good for a first! I cant tell if its the stencil or some of the lines are "Blown" towards the bottom?

Her not being petite can make it challenging if your positions arent right for good work.........making sure she is the right height for an easy stretch and comfort for you to work.....( still talking tattoo here boys)

With the shading and color it should turn out great. Maybe next time you will both be more comfortable and know what to expect from each other.....Having just tattooed a lady who passed out and then puked and was seriously wiggly I can say wishing you a better subject for practice though!

Serious suggestions for her are to do the touchups when she is 1 week after her monthly visitor, can make a whole world of difference when tattooing a woman. Also watching her caffiene intake, eating well before etc.....

Best~

The bottom right line of the shamrock is blown out. When she jumped, she literally jumped TOWARD the needles, so I was riding the tube, not the tips. Got her too deep. Afterwards, I tried to lean some of my weight into her to try to steady up the work surface.
Perhaps next time, I should adjust the tube for shallower needle depth and intentionally try to ride the tube?

Got the ex back for a finish-up session. Cleaned the lines up and put some color in. She wasn't quite so jumpy this time, but it was still a job of work, especially trying to get a good stretch on that fat ass!
