I'm thinking that I'd like to begin practicing on chrome and silver looks. In the image that is linked, the rose, I did a close up and it really doesn't look like there's a specific line that seperates the blck from the grey, then the grey from the white, nor does is look like it's shaded into each other either.

Does anyone have any tips, pointers or suggestions for beginning this type of work? Does this look like there are any specific color brand being used? A certain color formula? Any comments at this point would be wonderful since I have a willing victim coming in this weekend to do someting like this on them.

that image is a piece of flash someone colored in photoshop with the fade tool..

go into photoshop.... block in your full black .. then create a fade... then repeat with the silver...

black to silver then silver to white... you will have two seperate layers on top of a white background.. since you dont need to fade the white at all...

now... in tattoo terms... if i was going to tattoo it.. id go straight black to fade out to greywash... then for the white.. an even lighter greywash or just leave it skin.. but i prefer to do a super light greywash instead of open skin... offsets it against the skin better that way...

Thanks, psycho. I knew the image wasn't the actual tat, but I wanted to make it as realistic to those colors as I possibly could. I'll practice this week on the technique you suggested before putting it on her skin.

Oh wow, those pages are great! I think I actually GET it now, thank you soooo much, Forgiven!!

Are those images always there? Meaning, will the links work a few weeks down the road or should I try to save them as soon as possible? I won't be able to practice again until like Friday and I'd like to really study those pics when I practice.

I need more skin! My morbid mind just had a thought. You guys know how bodies are donated for medical purposes and research? Wouldn't it be cool if they could be donated for practicing tattoos? Hell, we use real skin from pigs. I think I'm kinda joking here. Kinda. lol

allways be best to save em, so you no where to look for em .. make a tattoo file and store em.. for your OWN personal reference..

One thing to think about when doing reflective effects is the surrounding objects. In reality anything near a reflective surface is reflected and distorted according to the shape of the reflective surface. A good way to practice is to look at old chrome bumpers in different shapes. Draw them for a while and pay attention to the objects reflected in them. It will give you an understanding of how different angles reflect objects differently. It's all about the correct amount of distortion.
