I dont have the cash for Photoshop anymore so I had to find a good replacement that would be legal (no burned disks)

I use Paint.Net (v3.10) and it has the majority of functions that the high end programs do- best of all the university that made it allows free downloads of the full program and so it fit into my budget nicely.

If you google Paint.Net you should find it fast enough.

Yeah- I wasnt too excited when I first heard 'free' but after I downloaded it and found it had most of the essential functions I was completely happy. That was last year and it was v2.7 then- they are adding updates alomost monthly too

Thanks man, I didn't have photoshop cause of the price (and I don't steal programs, it's bad karma) so this was very welcome indeed. Downloaded it last night and gave it a spin, I'm very impressed...also, it didn't even take long to download (and I have very poor dial-up service)

Yup the way I see it- if I love an artists work I buy his stuff so he can afford to live. Its the same for guys who write code so I ditched all my illegal software a few years back.

The only grey area I venture into is I'll download some songs to see if I like them THEN buy the album- if I dont like the song I dont keep it and if I do then it is important to me that the bands get paid. Because the type of bands I like dont get radio play most of them have online content anyway.

Glad the program is helpful- I found it perfect for my needs.

Thanks for the heads up....downloaded it, used it on a couple of pencil drawings of flash ideas. It kicks ass....tried the softening effect after adding color and it gives a real clean look... thanks again.

I think you should go with the best right from the start and that program is Photoshop. You can go to the Adobe site and download the trial version. Try and get and older version that is less complicated than the newer version. If you feel that it works for you I can give you a version that you will have no problems with. ;)

Plus once you play with it the program is not so scary. I have a lot of links to online tutorials that could help you navigate to the things you really want to do and not all the other crap... :)

Well....I'm in my slow season (so I've been told) so I can't feck around with any photoshop (since I don't illegally download software) and this program fits all my needs fine...hell, I produced two fine looking fliers for my shop on monday with this program.

lol some people prefer a high price tag I 'spose :D I have one friend who insists that his PC is 'better' even though the ONLY difference is he paid more ;)

Photoshop has slightly more functionality in that all you need to do is point and click. You dont need to 'know' anything which makes it good for beginners- example to make a 'plastic' layer you click plastic and it does the shiny plastic look. However I know about 20 people with burned copies and 3 with legal copies.

Nothing wrong with this free program - lots of folks use it for commercial works. To use this program you will need to know the basics of photo-manipulation. For example- the plastic layer, you'd want to create a copy of the layer, add it as a second layer over the first, make it semi transparent, tweak the contrast, apply a slight motion blur, tweak the contrast again. More work? yep. But I dont mind if my art takes time or effort. Maybe if I was cracking out a deadline I'd feel different though ;) Plus it is with in my price range and it gives me the same results my rich and/or software stealing peers do.

the paint.net page that led me to the download has a pretty sweet forum going as well, I've learned a lot about how to rock the program off of their forum....read something about plug-ins for it also

PHotoshop ELEMENTS is like 99 bucks and comes with every function you would need

elements just cuts out a bunch of custom filters and other superficial bullshit you really wont use for tattoo stuff the brush engine is the same and it has all the photo manipulation tools you would need

otherwise GIMP is a decent GNU opensource program but has a steep learning curve but pretty much does everything photoshop does

yeah I'm kicking myself for not stocking up on my Ed Software when I did my teaching degree :D Course most student copies cant be used for commercial work either so it wouldnt have been as helpful to me. Woulda made my wife happy though lol.

Nice!!! I know I found the program perfect for creative art- it is photo manipulation that its less handy at. As such it is amazing for people who can draw and sketch. Still it comes in handy for a lot of stuff:

My brother has been wanting something with Batman and superman symbols and I drew this up a while ago, and through it in the photo program so dont pay attention to the glamour and glitz hahaha. Just wonder what you guys think of the basic design and color.?
