well i have a question with kuro sumi outlining ink. well i have only used this ink twice. one on a friends which was tribal. tattoo was already there. he just wanted it darker. and the other was on a friend. script letters. i went to my friends house to check up on the script letters. and healing really nice solid fill no holidays. lines are pretty solid. just one lil problem. its not dark. the outlines looks clean but the N that is solid fill looks light. i even add some lotion just to think maybe it was dry and still looks light. sorry i dont have a pic. if u were to look at it u would see its a clean tattoo. just that its not dark like i thought it would be. it looks as if a thin layer of white skin over it making it look like its ashy but smooth. so i called my other friend with the tribal and he said he's having the same results. and his was done like 3 weeks ago. i seen how black heals and this doesnt look right to me. i dont think it's my technique cuz i never had this problem when i used other blacks. i heard alot of good things about kuro sumi and is really dark. so i thought i give a try so i'm wondering if anybody had this lil problem. kind of suck to do a nice piece and for it to heal light and have to go over again. and if ur wonder i bought the kuro sumi from superior and i also shook the bottler before used. here is a befor pic. sorry guy no after pic.

i asked a local tattoo artist who i think does some of the best here in the valley and he told me he uses mixes 50/50 of eternal triple black and outlining black is works really well. i was gonna give it a try but wanted to see what kuro sumi was all about. besides healing light and being oily. not really impress for the big hype. i used prizm black and got better results. thinkin of tryin "ONE" black ink. i used a lil of silver back gray wash for the shading of the scripts just to give a try. they healed really nice. been wanting to do a black and gray piece but havent had the chance.

I use straight Kuri Sumi outlining ink for all my lines, I use it cut in different gradients for my black and gray, but for solid fill work, I've been using the "One" black ink, hasn't really been long enough for me to see the results quite yet, but it seemed better from the get go for me

Talens guys...all you need. Outlines nicely, colors solid (if you know how to), and works well with water for b&g work (although a little on the dark side until you get it down). Either Talens, the orange label or the white label. It's a bit pricey these days, but it works!
Mogie, try a softer hitting machine and try to work the skin just enough to get a solid field of black. That's half the battle.

I did have a lot of success using straight Kuri Sumi as fill black, I only bought a bottle of the One because I've heard rave reviews, Like i said, I haven't seen the results yet, only been a few days since I got it (like maybe a week or so) but it sure as hell looked good and black and went in nice and quick, but I will continue using the Kuri Sumi as well because of I'm pretty familiar with it

yeah that tattoo artist i mentioned also told me he uses talons but just recenty started isng the 50/50 of eternal ink. isnt there a way to use prepare talons ink. somethin about boiling it in water with the lid open and u get a darker fill. can anybody school me on this.

I wouldn't boil your ink, you might change some of the chemical composition of it, and you don't want to be responsible if that does something to someone

talons white label is a superior product, real black stuff, however i like the way "one" looks in the skin a little bit better.personal preference when you have two dense blacks as these.

Maybe thats what I need to do...switch, 'cause thats what I've been using, the last pics I posted where done with Kuro Sumi.....and it seemed to me that the tribal black from Prizm looked better......I figured 'cause I heard so much shit on Prizm that I would change, but I dont know.......I used Prizm colors on the floral I posted and it went in fine and has held so far, been a year maybe.......but I do want to switch up to some better quality colors too, I think it will be an eye opening experience lol.

I know ink choice these days is pretty much a preference thing.. but man I wouldn't use prizm ink on anyone.. I'm pretty sure most artists consider it subpar quality ink.. check out some eternals.. you'll love em.

How is Millenium's black? I ended up with a bottle of that stuff, but haven't tried it yet. I too am having some inconsistencies with KuroSumi, although nothing major. I didn't want to mention it because there seem to be some hardcore kuro fans here.

It is quite a bit darker so you have to start with very little ink and a lot of distilled water until you find what works for you. I used mainly Pelikan prior to Talens and let me tell you it is very different. I used to go about 50-50 with Pelikan but with Talens, it's more like 80%water 20% ink for the same effect. You'll find your groove, just start light. Works great uncut for solid black and is as thin as anything I have ever seen.

that would be Talens with an "e" and he was talking about the white label. Yes you can fill tribal with it.

actually they have had quite a few problems with reactions.
allergic reaction on chemicals they use for fast drying on paper.
that is why they came out with a new tattoo specific ink.
from what i understand talens (white label) and pelikan both add
(vegitable varnish) which needs to be boiled out, also turning the ink a darker shade..both have stated this should not be used for tattoo ink.
they both are coming out with a tattoo specific ink..
i think the new talens tattoo ink is out there.

Eternal Triple Black or One, talons seems to have a varnish like someone said before. Eternal flows smoooth, almost like oil, has a oily consistency but real nice. I quit using talons on skin and just use it on paper now. My .o2

I've been using Talens for at least 9 years now and I have never once (knock on wood) had a reaction. I'm not saying that it's not possible, but I'm sure I would've had at least some kind of an issue by now if it was unsafe. Say what you will about it, but if you cannot get solid deep black with Talens than you need to learn how to apply color.

i should have added this to my last reply..
i i still use talens and kuro-sumi and just started using ONE.
i have never had a reaction to applying any suppliers black.
i have also never seen a reaction from talens, just wanted to make that clear.

true, cant say i have ever heard of a reaction to talens here in the states. but anyone can be allergic to anything at any time, doesn't mean you throw the baby out with the bath water. it does have a odd oily consistency to it, been using it on and off for about 10 + years . i always keep a fresh bottle of the stuff in the closet. if you cant get talens white label dark enough or to heal to your liking, perhaps you need to examine your technique or your equipment.

What is the general 'life span' of Talens black ink?
I was using it here in Australia a few years back and never had any adverse reactions. Still have some in a bottle but it would be about 6 years old now.
Cheers

best to use that for paper and buy a fresh bottle. I'm not saying that it isn't safe or any worse than the last bottle I bought, but it has been opened and sat for a long time...better to start fresh.

yea id say better safe than sorry...! what is the general life span of inks?? my eternals have a date on them so i no.. but have had inks with no expire date on them? so just wondering when they become questionable?
maxauto
12-13-2007, 08:26 AM
everyone one of my bottles that does have a date specifies 2 yrs. once they reach the expire date i dont use them for tattooing. i either throw them out or paint on paper with em...
maxauto
12-13-2007, 08:38 AM
sorry, obviously ink without the date lasts the same time span.
i write the date with a permanent marker, the day i get it.. whether it sat on the shelf for two yrs before i got it or not. i wouldnt know if it did?.. just purchase from a reputable company, not some guy on the bay selling 2 year old starbrite or moms that doesnt have a date imprinted.

Well, that would explain it. What the hell would I want a bottle of black wash for? It came with one of the ink sets. Wouldn't you think they'd ship you their blackest black for outlining? Nowhere on the bottle does it say anything about being a wash. Of course, I could be a moron too, which is most likely the case. :D
