Firstly i am not a tattoo artist although i have been ivolved in the industry for over 10 years now. I am a piercer, hairstylist and tattoo colector. From Australia but been living in HK for 19 years now, its awsome.
I opened HK's first hygenic western salon in 1997 when everyone was running for cover from the PLA and for a while it worked great. I ran into trouble getting 'quality' artists so i pulled the plug and reduced it to piercing and the occasional guest artist. It may also have been a little too early in the market to really take off. I have had artists in from, China, Thailan, Taiwan, UK, Europe, Mexico and of course the US over the years. Tattooing in HK over the last few years though has started to really take off and is becoming much more accepted and sort after. I was still often asked about getting in guest artists so when an oportunity came up to open a new studio I figured I would take it. The studio is the most modern and well set up in HK (can you believe we are the only studio in HK with a stencil machine?) and in a great location. Most studios in HK are either in an old walk up building (upstairs) or tucked away in basements somewhere. We have opened in the newest urban street fashion shopping arcade in one of the bussiest areas of the city.
I have a resident artist from GZ China who is on the board for the Chinese goverment tattoo regulations and has been inking for 20 years. I want to create a truely international experience for our clients and in order to get them comig back for more ink i contine to invite and promote new aretists in the studio. I have a "stencil machine" or as i call it a thermofax/heat transfer ! haha, came by the mall but you weren't there, will come back soon...when all the dust has settled. stuff was pretty hectic when i swung by! opening shop is prob the most stressful thing ever!
