View Full Version : Vibration and Frame Question

In my never ending quest to gain understanding and knowledge in this tattooing trade...I have come upon yet another question..well really..just a thought.
Now vibrations from a machine I have read can be "absorbed" through the frame and some material is better at this than others.
Now im not the smartest man in the world but wouldn't a CNC frame be the better choice for a machine overall?
It's all one piece and it's nice and sturdy right? You wouldn't have to worry about air pockets ..just 1 nice solid piece of metal to work with. The thickness of the frame would be consistent and maybe easier to balance as well?
I know some people have a preference of material (I.E. Aluminum to Brass)
But I know theres trade offs in that as well.
The reason im asking is because I seen some machines from ya boy Aaron Cain, Seth Cifferri and International Tattoo supply..and they're bolted on (Alot of the new ones anyway)..Im not testing the logic of Cain or Seth at all..but I figured with all the vibrations from the machine wouldn't that affect this some kind of way over time? I figure less moving parts the better...the screws would loosen over time causing it to vibrate even more right? So why even bother? Wouldn't this be a "less desirable" frame compared to a welded or cast?

good question squid, however lets not put Aaron cain, and Seth in the same sentence with international tattoo supply, thats just wrong.lol i know a.c. and seth, work with exotic materials like mokume and meteorites, i don't work with this stuff so i don't know what can be done with it as pertaining to heat etc., at first they carved the frames out of all 1 block and used a yoke, i think they found it to be a hell of allot cheaper and faster to have side plates cut and bolt them on a good base/chuck. now as for builders bolting there stuff together ,
if its a 1 off custom and if its done properly, there shouldn't be any excess rattling or screws rattling loose. guide pins and brazing seems to work better over bolts if you dont have a welder set up, as for your cnc method, yes, in theory cnc is the way to go...very expensive just to have 1 or 2 machines made thou, large runs work well, this keeps the cost per frame down.

one more thing , most vibration, noise on a tattoo machine comes from simple things like the springs not cut right or aligned properly, the wrong size washers, poor grommet material, thin binders, a bar off tilt, etc. these things wouldn't be absorbed by the frame anyway, welded, cast or bolted together.

That's funny as hell, but hey man international is trying to bring their shit up to those standards, they just started selling a limited edition machine by somebody cant remember the builders name right off hand, but these are supposedly made out of the meteorites and they have the sideplate screwed on as well, hell they better be made from the real deal cus they are selling them at $400 a pop.

AAahhhh oh ok I see.
Yeah I didn't mean to lump Cain and Seth with ITS haha...I just noticed they have made the jump to bolted on machine frames as well (and using damascus and meteorite none the less)
So i see me thinking was on the right track (not saying I was correct)..But since Cain and Seth know what they're doing I'd trust a machine from em...And ITS no doubt mass produces so I see where your comming from about brazing the bolts to make sure they hold fast...when I get back from deployment this summer im DEFINITELY gonna get into a metal shop class

His name is "Davan" if im not mistaken. And yeah they'r egoing for 400 beans...that's even more than the Damascus ones they're pumping out. Think it's possible that they might actually be putting out a quality product now? Maybe like how Pulse is?

I seen some sweet looking frames from Mike Pike that are CNC'd...It looked pretty damn nice from what I could make out with my little knowledge...I got one of his cast frames from Paulo Fernando.

That sounds like the name i seen on them.I'm thinking since they are not directly made by them, just selling through them they may be a better quality than their regular shit, but i aint gonna put out the $400 to find out lol.

yeah take a look at the 400 ITS meteor frames, same cheap ass bindings, abars, and coils. So what truly is the point if everything else is shit. And as far as Cain and Ceferri, 1200 for a machine, not this sucker.

never heard of that dude, (davan)however there are a few big names that i look up to because of there machine prowess who recently began selling thru huge companies such as an i.t.s. its odd to see this because a short 5 years ago, you couldn't get any of this guys stuff with out some serious credentials. and he was very adamant about his machines being in the right hands. i guess values wont pay your mortgage later in life. man 400 clams for some stone made by i guy i never heard of. and the shit has bids on ebay! . seths brother Adam is the man and builds better stuff in my opinion. its just amazing to me how people can build a whole phenomena around something. just cuz seth was on tv, you can add a couple hundred clams to the next machine you get..why is it any better than the one he built yesterday? no, cuz they are going to increase in value? no, or very little, they will hold there value but these two are putting out way too many machines for them to really spike in value. ive seen some of them puppies hit 1500. now someone is going to give this guy3-5 k for it in 10 years? who knows. must be nice to have that kind of loot. now lets talk about how they run. well that depends on who ya ask. i ran a seth machine once and owned a cain, is there better running stuff for a fraction of the price, hell ya. most of the cain models that i see have mass produced parts on it from lucky supply and soba...what up with that? one of the most talented builders that i have ever seen is right here on this forum, the kids got mad skills, goes by the name of inkpressit? and for all you seth /cain junkies, 'im sure i am in the minority here, so dont get your panties all up in a bunch... just my opinion....

Go the Dringe!!!
BR, You dont need or wanna know who Davan is...... Short call he's a thief, His meteorites on fleabag, even if through ITS were ripped of sideplates, he knocked 2 sidies directly off John(Clarks) & Terrells smooth curved beauty.
Thats the prob with commin up with somit nice... pretty soon someone's gonna rip ya (they'll neva get $1 from me).
Now back to Squidlies Q, Properly set sideplates bolted on using the right shiz will never vibe loose.
Aaron himself has pulled no words on the bolt togethers etc, they're quicker for him to build which means he has more available for those seekin em (all good in my book) cause the guy aint a frikkin machine and continual hand grinding and setting of casts will overtime take their toll.

Damn ...cats biting styles and not even given somebody else their props is the worst yo....Damn shame..John does up some nice looking machines for sure
Inks does SICK work to a frame as well! He's definitely no punk with his style
Im a have to bug him when I get my shit straight!:D
At least Aaron is telling it like it is though about his new bolt ons...I don't understand the price on Ebay though..Your right Raven I ain't kicking NO WHERE that amount of cheese for a machine from..Im glad his name fetches that kinda coin but wow...there's some serious bidding wars for him and Seth's machines! I've seen Adams posted on there alot as well but your right ,they don't reach the numbers his brother does.
Yo Inks, Framey, and Forgiven, and Raven....you guys should collab on some machines together! You got good reps and make nice products
