I am wanting to start on first machine build and want to know the cheapest material to use so I can be more than happy to go ahead and srew it up... until I get it right......LOL I don't mind the cost to much just not copper and brass!!! LMAO A good metal suggestion anyone???
I want something that I can mess about with while learning what not to do.....mostly that won't kill me in the pocket to much....LOL
I have alot of the tools also....Ie...... Table grinders x2, plasma cutter x1 cuts up to 10mm, Mig welder x1 up to 7mm, brazing torch, x2 dremals, with hundreds of bits, Bansaw, Radio / CD Player, Fridge of beer.... Mad hand tools also...
Any tool advice also would be cool...

Only thing I can recommend, is find some people who have scrap metal that wants to get rid of it!

Go to the local steel yard, buy a length of 1/4" angle iron, cut out shape, drill and tap yer holes, grind away...only need to weld the spring deck on.....

Hey Jeff, go to homebase and check there stock of cold rolled steel, Not the cheapest but certainly not expensive.... Get some decent square bar to make some bases and you can practice drilling your vices and coil centres etc, some flat bar for your up-rights.... practice practice practice till you get your geometries instinctive ;)

In my area, I have found the scrap yards have lots of plate aluminum for some reason. The scrap price is pretty close to new steel prices and aluminum is much easier to work for the most part. Tapping some type of aluminum can be a bear but that is pretty minor compared to the work saved grinding and sawing.
I'm not one to talk, I haven't made a machine out of Aluminum yet, Titanium, brass, stainless steel and, cast steel etc,,, but no aluminum.
